Certain parties are trying to convince me to get a Mustang GT. But this would be a *badass* retro commuter. Doesn’t look like it would need a ton of work to finish restoring, either. Radio tombstone/surround, a driver seat, a little paintwork and a thorough detail would do the trick. God damn I want to make a bad decision.

Woah, a new Wichita oppo? Nice to meet you! I’m just idly browsing craigslist for candidates for a new commuter to get from Derby to Park City every day. If the subframe on my Miata is bent and needs replacing I’m going to just buy something different and either sell the Miata or just shove it on the back burner for a while.

But those Celicas are super cheap to insure. Also 22RE! Though maybe try to confirm that alleged timing chain job. The 22RE does have weak guide that can allow the chain to eat into the back of the water pump. So feh, drive it hard and see and see if the temp gauges gets over 50%. My 22R never gave me any problems.

How reliable are they, timing chain notwithstanding? Parts availability? This seems like something that would be worth it to have the paint fixed, repair the torn seat, and find a radio surround for a mostly-complete retro JDMTyteYo ride.

Parts availability for the engine? Outstanding.
Parts availability for that body and interior? Not good. So be safe.
The 22RE is probably the most well-known Toyota engine stateside (sorry, memes about two Jay Z’s in under your hood does not count), and is strongly associated with extreme reliability. Kind of a circle jerk among owners to be honest, though for good reason. Timing chain guides failure is not at all common, but when replacing the water pump and thermostat and whatnot, make sure you take a look when timing. When I daily’d a 22R (just means carb instead of fuel injection, same damn engine) for four years, the only thing I did was change the oil and replace a fuel filter (which is under the hood).

And what

what does that have anything to down with the fact you want it? hop on a plane or a bus and get it!

I’m afraid that I’ve been wooed by it’s successor. I will not be satisfied until I find my own GT-S. Or until I change my mind again tomorrow about what I want to buy.

“Idly browsing” is a dangerous game, that how I ended up with my last three cars. I actually think I saw this car on my drive home from work today in front of yost automotive on 2nd st. (Could very well be wrong about that though). So are there a lot of oppo people around Wichita or something? I always figured I was stranded.

Is that like an AE86?
![]() 01/13/2016 at 01:36 |

RA64 just pertains to that particular generation of celica... like a B5 A6 or a W123 300TD or AE92 Corolla. On oppo I notice the “hip” thing is to refer to car by generation code (or whatever that’she called) instead of year.

Oh I was just more interested in the similarities and differences between this and the AE86. The body looks very similar.

Oops -_-

Anyway all I know about that comparison is that the celica was heavier and got

All I know about that stuff is that the Celica was heavier and had less HP, but more Torque. They are also not on he same chasis.

Oh... You have no idea. There *were* 5 of us (at least) but now there are 3 (not including me).
JayhawkJake
Jake, man of the Miata
Midengineer
Me (in OKC for college)
Jay Lauer (Moved to KC for work)

Actually, at least with the top end, there are very few interchangeable parts IIRC.

Right now the only full Wichita oppos are myself, JayhawkJake (drives a lightly modified Chevrolet Sonic which he autocrosses) and Midengineer (drives a flawless condition Toyota MR2 Turbo SW20). The rest only live here part-time now. What do you drive?

I guess you can add me into the wichita oppos list. Currently I have my 92 Subaru SVX, 89 Mazda RX7, and my daily driver a 05 Mini Cooper S.

That’s a damn Oppo garage. Holy hell.

Jay is here often enough to count as full time.
Also that MR2 isn’t flawless. It has a tendency to snap oversteer.

Also that conrader guy with a FiST, though I haven’t seen him on here in a long time. There was another, PlayerWAN I think, but he never met up with us.

Hey! I come back every 2 weeks or so!
If you guys planned stuff slightly more ahead of time I would be available more!

I thought conrader was near Salina?
